At the end of January 2019, the dog you see on the left was brought into us from the dog warden and our jaws dropped to the ground. We couldn't believe that anyone had allowed a dog to ger into this horrific state.

He couldn't see because of the endless balls of dirty matts. The matts covered his eyes, ears and legs. He kept rubbing up against us as his skin was so sore and itchy. Life was nothing but misery for this little dog and clearly had been for some time. We couldn't even tell what breed of dog he was, such was the build up of dirt, mud and goodness knows what else. We were absolutely horrified by his state. Despite the appalling neglect he had experienced, we knew people had been kind to him at some point in his life...because his little tail didn't stop wagging from the moment we took him out of the dog warden's van. We shook our heads and promised him everything would be better from now on.

Sometimes working in rescue is such a soul-crushing job and you experience things you could never have imagined in your previous life, fates that befall vulnerable dogs who never deserve the failings that they get in life from humans. We called our waggy little boy "Matty" (humour is all you've got in some situations) and immediately phoned our groomer friend Mairead of Madra Galánta in Carraroe. We knew she was busy but we didn't want to leave him suffering for a minute longer. Mairead dropped what she was doing and was at our shelter within 15 mins to pick up Matty and whisk him away for a groom so that he could finally start feeling better. It goes without saying, we didn't recognise him when he came back to us. The only thing that was the same was his gentle, friendly nature and non-stop waggy tail!

His story touched a lot of people and after only a few days with us, he happily headed off to start his new life with a family who were instantly besotted with him! And a new name....Buddy!

Just over a year later, Little Buddy is is celebrating his 1st Gotcha Day!!! Look at him now! Happy, healthy and with a beautifully groomed coat. He hadn't forgotten his past as he brought lots of treats for the other doggies at MADRA to enjoy.❤🐾

Thanks so much to Buddy and his family. It is stories like his why we work so hard and why we want better dog welfare standards in our country. We're so glad that we helped Buddy feel better and found him the ten star home he deserved. Thanks to Mairead too.x

Happy 1st Gotcha Day Buddy!!! Xxxxx

Fostering a tricky is not as tricky as it may sound

A message from Tricky foster mum Gayle:

"An appeal goes up for a fosterer and you think, I could do that, then you read further and you see the word "Tricky" and you immediately think, oh no, I haven’t enough experience, I haven't enough training skills, they will be too hard to cope with.

I did...
